The Client
Designed to pierce the soil, the sensor would signal the Lawn Tap app once grass reached the user’s preferred height. To secure manufacturing investments, the client needed an industrial design proposal showcasing the sensor’s innovative utility and aesthetic appeal. This proposal aimed to merge functionality with visual sophistication, enticing stakeholders to back this cutting-edge lawn care solution.
The Challenge
The client’s team had done some of their own development with Raspberry Pi and other system components with an incubator at Georgia Tech. Kickr’s team was tasked with creating a consumer friendly and commercially manufacturable embodiment for the product. The lawn growth sensor posed challenges in balancing an innocuous but pleasing aesthetic with rugged outdoor durability requiring a waterproof rating while integrating custom and off-the-shelf components.
The Solution
- Assessed the clients needs based on their previous work.
- Generated industrial design sketch concepts based on their inspiration deck.
- Created cosmetic CAD models of favored design concepts.
- Developed mechanical design for the housing suitable for 3D printing and testing.
The Results
Kickr Design delivered STL files tailored for 3D printing for rapid prototyping and testing. Additionally, the team created high-quality product renders that showcased the sensor’s sleek and modern aesthetic. These renders served as powerful visual tools to attract investor interest, effectively communicating the product’s innovative design and functionality.
